We offer deer hunts throughout the hunting seasons starting with the archery and muzzleloader seasons followed by the regular rifle seasons (deer licenses are not available first rifle, only available second and third rifle). Within the Mount Zirkel Wilderness, there also is an Early High Country Rifle Season which is in early September (typically coincides with muzzleloader season). It does take several points to draw these tags (see our “Trip Planning” section for points required for all deer licenses; some require no points to draw) but this can offer an excellent opportunity to harvest a trophy buck! We regularly see bucks in the 170-180 class and 200 class bucks are possible in this area!

Our deer hunting tactics are getting up high early, at or above tree line and glassing during the early seasons. Once the regular rifle seasons come on, bucks will look for more cover but glassing and stalking can still be very effective. By the time third rifle season comes around, bucks are moving down in anticipation of the rut and snow. In general, they can be on the move more during this time looking for does so setting up near feeding areas where does regularly visit can be very productive.
